Cider and Perry Information
Cider Varieties
Although the New York and Michigan apple growing areas dominate the cider industry, there has been a growing interest in growing cider apples in our own area. We can learn from others in some of these other areas about apple cultivars to consider. If they grow in New York or Michigan, they will likely grow well here. To downlaod a copy of Michigan State University extension bulletin E3364, "Apple Cultivars for Production of Hard Cider in Michigan," covering apple cultivars for cider click here. Also check out "Hard Cider Varieties Suitable for Northern Michigan." Another source based in Colorado, The Cider School, has a good explanation of the characteristics sought in a cider apple. Their site also includes a list and description of cider apples and a very useful gateway into other cider related sites (see "Sites" under "Other Resources" down near the bottom of that webpage). One of the best collections of cider and perry links is at The Cider Workshop.
